Ultrasound Examinations by Trimester

First Trimester (0–3 months):
Used to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy, assess gestational age, and estimate the expected date of delivery. After approximately 8 weeks of gestation, the fetal heartbeat can be visualized and detected.

Second Trimester (4–6 months):
Used to evaluate fetal anatomy, commonly referred to as the “anomaly scan” or detailed fetal structural assessment. Fetal sex determination can also be performed during this period.

Third Trimester (from 7 months onward):
Used to assess fetal growth, estimated fetal weight, amniotic fluid volume, placental location, and umbilical cord vessels to evaluate overall fetal well-being.

Differences Between 2D and 4D Ultrasound

2D Ultrasound:
Primarily used to assess gestational age and fetal anatomy. The images produced are two-dimensional and displayed in grayscale.

4D Ultrasound:
Uses specialized transducers to visualize the fetal face and external features. It produces realistic, skin-toned, three-dimensional images with real-time video recording capability.

Safety of Ultrasound Examination

Ultrasound uses sound waves for imaging. Current medical evidence shows no harmful effects on either the mother or the fetus. Therefore, pregnant women can undergo ultrasound examinations without concern.
