Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): A Silent Threat Close to You

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a group of diseases transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact or exposure to infected bodily fluids. The causative pathogens may include viruses, bacteria, or protozoa. Once infection occurs, the body may develop inflammation and show varying symptoms depending on the specific pathogen involved.

Signs and Symptoms That May Indicate an STI

STI symptoms vary widely depending on the type of infection, the immune status of the individual, and the duration of infection. Common warning signs include:

  • Rashes, ulcers, or vesicles on the genital area

  • Yellow-green or purulent vaginal discharge

  • Recurrent abnormal vaginal discharge

  • Dysuria, or urine mixed with pus or blood

  • Enlarged inguinal lymph nodes

  • Lower abdominal pain accompanied by fever

  • History of multiple sexual partners or unprotected intercourse

However, some STIs may present with no symptoms at all. Therefore, individuals at risk should undergo screening for early evaluation and diagnosis.

Methods for STI Testing

STI testing can be performed using various methods depending on the symptoms and the specific condition being investigated. Common diagnostic approaches include:

1. Physical Examination and Pelvic Examination

Suitable for patients with visible lesions such as ulcers, rashes, abnormal discharge, or pelvic pain. Physicians can diagnose based on observed findings and initiate management immediately if necessary.

2. Blood Tests

Used to detect infections that are often asymptomatic in the early stages, such as:

HIV

Hepatitis B and C

Syphilis

3. Specimen Collection for Laboratory Testing

This method involves collecting samples from the vagina or urine to detect the genetic material of pathogens. It is highly accurate and able to detect infections even in asymptomatic stages. This is the preferred method for comprehensive STI screening.

Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections

While PrEP and PEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection, they do not protect against other STIs. Therefore, the most effective preventive strategies include:

  • Consistent condom use (male or female condoms) during every sexual encounter

  • Regular health check-ups, especially for individuals at higher risk

  • Avoiding high-risk behaviors such as frequent partner changes or unprotected sex

Although condom use significantly lowers the risk, it does not provide 100% protection. If you experience unusual symptoms or suspect possible exposure, early testing is strongly recommended.
