Labiaplasty (Minor Labia Surgery)

What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the length of the labia minora. It is one of the most commonly performed female genital cosmetic surgeries, aiming primarily to relieve discomfort caused by twisting, tugging, or irritation of the labia minora.
Why Do Women Choose Labiaplasty?
Women may seek this procedure for a variety of reasons, including:
-
Pain or discomfort from twisting or pulling of the labia during activities such as cycling or sexual intercourse
-
Itching and irritation
-
Feeling self-conscious about the appearance of their genital area
What Can Labiaplasty Improve?
The goal of labiaplasty is to reduce the size of the labia minora so they do not protrude below the hair-bearing labia majora. The procedure may correct asymmetry or, more commonly, reduce the size of both sides to prevent twisting, tugging, or visibility in tight clothing or swimwear.
Anesthesia Used for Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia combined with oral sedation, or under general anesthesia.
Labiaplasty Techniques
Two of the most commonly used techniques include:
-
Trim Technique: The excess tissue is removed along the edge of the labia and closed directly.
-
Wedge Technique: A triangular wedge of tissue is removed and the edges are sutured to maintain the natural contour.
In some cases, reduction of the clitoral hood may be performed at the same time. Absorbable sutures are typically used.
Risks of Labiaplasty
As with any surgical procedure, labiaplasty carries potential risks, such as:
-
Bleeding
-
Hematoma
-
Infection
The most common complication is excessive tissue removal, which may lead to chronic dryness, scarring near the vaginal opening, and pain during intercourse. This is particularly associated with the wedge technique, which can also be prone to delayed wound healing if vasoconstrictive agents are used.
Recovery After Labiaplasty
Most patients take about one week off from work. Swelling and discomfort can be reduced by applying cold packs placed between underwear and a compression garment such as Spanx. Apply for 20 minutes, then rest for 20 minutes. Elevating the hips while lying down can also help reduce swelling.
Patients may resume the use of tampons or sexual intercourse after 4–6 weeks. The trim technique generally allows for a faster recovery.
Major swelling typically improves within 6 weeks, while minor swelling may take up to 6 months to completely resolve.
Results of Labiaplasty
Overall, labiaplasty effectively shortens the labia minora so they no longer extend below the labia majora. Most patients who previously experienced twisting or pulling of the labia report significant relief following surgery. Multiple studies show that satisfaction rates exceed 90%.
