Pelvic Pain / Dysmenorrhea

What Is Pelvic Pain / Menstrual Pain?
Pelvic pain refers to discomfort occurring in the lower abdomen, which may arise from various causes, including disorders of the reproductive system, urinary tract, or large intestine. In women, this symptom is commonly associated with the menstrual cycle or underlying gynecologic conditions.
Menstrual pain, or dysmenorrhea, is characterized by cramping or deep aching pain that typically occurs during menstruation. It is primarily caused by uterine contractions expelling the endometrial lining. The severity of pain varies from person to person.
What Are the Common Symptoms?
Symptoms of pelvic pain or dysmenorrhea may include:
-
Cramping or dull aching pain in the lower abdomen
-
Pain radiating to the lower back or thighs
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Dizziness or fatigue
-
Bloating, diarrhea, or constipation
-
Fever or abnormal vaginal discharge (in cases related to infection or other underlying conditions)
Potential Consequences
Although pelvic pain and menstrual pain are common, severe or persistent symptoms can lead to the following issues:
-
Reduced quality of life: Difficulty with work, school, or daily activities
-
Psychological impact: Including stress, anxiety, or depressive symptoms
-
Possible complications: Chronic pelvic pain may be associated with conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian endometriomas (chocolate cysts), or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
-
Infertility: Particularly when the pain is a result of untreated gynecologic conditions
When to Seek Medical Attention
If pelvic pain or menstrual pain significantly affects daily life, evaluation by a specialist is recommended. Proper diagnosis can help identify the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment options tailored to the individual.
